I was 50 years old when I landed in St Leonards On Sea, wondering why it had taken me so long to live by the sea, when it feels now like my natural habitat. Being a poet, it’s natural that a relationship emerged, absorbing this environment and not simply questioning but feeling the urge to record this in some tangible form. It is pointless to anthropomorphise - superimposing ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ traits is something of a delusion - except to be able to express this love, this admiration towards what has become an unexpected partnership... but the allure is unmistakable. Like a person throwing come-n-get-me glances across a room. The risking, trusting, dancing, stepping on toes and feeling the pushback, the immersion at once sublime yet a breath from being subsumed and transformed… sublimation… how could one not give in to it and fall in love? All I can attempt to do is to paint pictures and hope you catch – or are caught by – the connecting rhythms and phrases linking each progressive poem, to be carried along by its current.
